Teen babysitters can be a great fit. They have lots of energy, they’re often more flexible on weeknights and weekends, and kids love them. Here are a few questions that help you find the right one.
1. “How much babysitting have you done?”
Ask about ages. Babysitting siblings, cousins or neighbors counts. It shows they know how to handle real kid moments, like meltdowns, snacks and bedtime battles.
2. “What ages are you most comfortable with?”
A good sitter will be honest about this. Someone who’s great with five-year-olds might not be ready for a newborn, and that’s okay.
3. “What do you like to do with kids?”
Listen for real answers, like games, crafts, reading or going outside. A sitter with a plan keeps kids busy and happy, and off screens.
4. “Can you handle meals, diapers and bedtime?”
Be specific about what you need that night. Many teens can cook simple meals and handle a whole bedtime routine. Just check first.
5. “Have you taken any training?”
Babysitting or first-aid courses are a big plus. The American Red Cross, for example, offers babysitting training. If a sitter hasn’t done one yet, ask if they’re planning to.
6. “How does booking work, and is a parent involved?”
With younger teens, it’s reassuring when their parent helps with scheduling. You know an adult is in the loop and can answer questions.
7. “What would you do if…?”
Try a simple scenario, like “What if my child bumps their head?” or “What if they won’t go to bed?” You’re not looking for a perfect answer. You’re looking for someone who stays calm and calls you when something’s not right.
