Pets like their routines. The easier you make it for your sitter to follow that routine, the calmer your pet will be while you’re gone. Here’s what to leave out.
The basics
- Food, and exactly how much. “One scoop” means different things to different people. Leave the scoop in the bag, or write the amount in cups.
- Feeding times. Morning, evening, or both?
- Treats. Which ones are okay, and how many?
- Water. Where the bowl is, and how often to refresh it. For fish, how (and whether) to top off the tank.
Your pet’s personality
A few notes go a long way:
- Are they shy with new people? Should the sitter give them space at first?
- Favorite toys or games?
- Any habits to watch for, like a cat who slips out the door or a dog who counter-surfs?
For specific pets
- Cats: where the litter box and scoop are, and how often to clean it.
- Dogs: potty routine, where the leash is, and any “don’t let them do this” rules.
- Fish: exact feeding amounts. Overfeeding is the most common mistake.
- Bunnies: hay and fresh greens, and which foods are off-limits.
Just in case
- Your phone number and a backup contact nearby.
- Your vet’s name and number.
- Anything unusual to watch for, like not eating, hiding or throwing up.
Share door codes and your address directly with your sitter, never in public posts or online forms.
